So I’m back & the blog is back up. The site went down in March. The site has been up for about 2 weeks, and here we are.
Cyber is a stressful job.
Before the site went down, I was under high expectations from those less qualified than myself, and the masses, for updates. This came mostly from the US based crowd of course, and all it’s disparate groups.
At the same time, back in the Spring when this site went down, I was heavily getting probed on this site by Singapore based, Chinese APT groups. These weren’t one off events. As I remember it, their campaign against this site began around the turn of the new year. It was several months at a minimum. My last posts reference this campaign in it’s entirety – here, as well as here.
So to be clear, the emphasis is the term – CAMPAIGN.
Not a pentest, not a scan, not a shell. A campaign.
This campaign was spread across several different regions around the Singapore region. Additionally this campaign was launched from several different domains as well as a dozen or so Ip addresses. So again, not a shell, not a pentest – a campaign. This is the key distinction most noobs should understand. There is cyber, and then there is cyber at the APT/political level. They are two different beasts.
Of course much of this can be attributed to my past efforts against China, the MSS, Charlie Baker when he was Governor of Massachusetts, and more of the like.
So they had memory of my actions. Before their campaign began before the turn of the new year, there was a couple years gap, so I think this is important to point out.
They did not forget what I did a couple few years prior, took time to formulate a plan, then a campaign, and a couple yrs later followed through on that campaign. This was done with an APT group I would surmise, based on the traffic I was seeing on this site.
At the same time, I was heavily being expected to speak publicly on behalf of US cyber, from entities not paying me for it. I work on my own stuff, and get paid for that.
Just because the US is in a natsec transition and I’m in the middle peripheries of it, doesn’t mean I speak at the level for which I’m being engaged at.
If that’s the case, since the sophistication of adversary’s against this site were MSS supported apt groups, that would command a $xxxx speaking fee, or a billing rate of over a couple hundred per hour.
I’ve got their attention, and it’s politically a bad decision for them not to pay attention now. So what does this mean? It means that in the West/North America/USA, where I live, those who don’t pay attention – are not in the loop. It’s as simple as that, and here’s the key distinction – it’s NOT to my detriment.
So again, I work on my own stuff. If you want me to work on your company/institution that’s at the MSS APT level, then you have to rise up to the occasion. That means finding me, emailing me or making contact thru the contact page, setting up a meeting, and sitting across from me and writing a check. If you want a seat at the table, you have to step to the table, THAT I CREATED.
Otherwise, it’s just not going to happen. I started at ground zero. I’m too busy building my own stuff, for the long term. I was here before most of you, and will be, after you’re gone.
